Locality 96-20. 69° 16' 18" N 162° 46' 05" W
Corwin Formation
Specimen: 96 RAS 111, 112
Description. A tree trunk 2.9 m in length, partially compressed and elliptical in cross section, 23 cm (short axis) - 34 cm (long axis) diameter. The trunk was weathered out on the river bank in three pieces. The structure was apparently well preserved with a coaly bark. The trunk was apparently derived from a dark gray, weathering to orange/brown, silty mudstone containing large-leaved Podozamites and Equisetites. 96 RAS 111 is a sample of wood from the outer edge of the trunk at the apex of the long cross sectional axis. 96 RAS 112 is a sample of Podozamites from the mudstones.
Interpretation. Floodplain sediments supporting a wooded vegetation rich in Podozamites. The strong association at this locality and the previous between large logs and Podozamites leaves strongly suggests that plants producing Podozamites possessed a straight-trunk at least 10 m in height.
Below: Field photograph of the tree trunk that in total measured 2.9 m in length.
